Room 14

Room 14 named their sculpture Waiata Bamboo. They have attached decorated hanging bamboo pipes to the deck posts outside the back of Room 15. These pipes make a musical sound when they are struck or when there is a breeze.

The class was inspired to create a musical piece of art that could be ‘played’ by the children. Room 14 wondered how they could achieve this. After listening to our class drummers one child said that he had bamboo in his garden and his Dad cut it and brought it into class. Another child brought in a saw. Together the children discussed, measured, sawed, sanded, drilled, cut harakeke after saying a karakia, plaited ropes, researched designs and finally painted cultural patterns to create Waiata (singing) Bamboo. Come and play a gentle tune.
